How Can I Use Public Relations For My Small Business?
Your Small Business Has Made It, Now You Need Public Relations
So finally it’s here, the big launch for your brand new company. You’ve thought of just about everything except how to share this day with the world. You need some public relations for your small business, but how to begin? I would say, look no further than your dominant hand, because that’s where your network is, also known as your phone. That’s right each and every one of us has our own media network lying in the palm of our hands. Your phone is a multi million dollar marketing tool, and if you don’t believe me, I give you exhibit A, the Kardashian Family. Yes, I said the Kardashians, they created a following on their social media platforms with the relentless and obsessive consistency of posting their brands, lifestyle and turned a trip to the grocery store into a “Red Carpet” event.
You Don’t Have To Be A Kardashian
Here’s the best part, you don’t have to be a Kardashian to get mainstream media coverage. But it sure does help to think like one, as journalists find experts & entrepreneurs with large social media followings very appealing. Remember, Public Relations Increases Brand Credibility. It serves as a bridge that trust-gap between a business and its would-be clients or customers, the business can hire someone in public relations. But you can save yourself anywhere from $3000-$5000 per month if you have the know how. The expert works on increasing their credibility within their given industry and increasing their overall reputation. Which in turn leads to sales and influence. But the first thing a public relations expert will do, is look to land your business on a popular television broadcast or podcast to help add visibility to your brand. You see it’s the objective third party validation by a mainstream media outlet is worth its weight in gold.
Think about your last purchase, who are you more likely to trust, a trusted industry journalist who has done the research and proved the product effective or an infomercial or marketing campaign about the product. Makes sense doesn’t it.
The Online Media Benefit of Public Relations For Your Small Business
Another key benefit of creating your own public relations strategy and executing it to your best ability, unlike traditional media, online media doesn’t have a shelf life. News articles remain visible on search engines indefinitely. This means any PR content you create can gain more value as it lives on. Other news outlets, bloggers and even customers may link and share the media coverage. By sharing timely and relevant stories across earned, owned and shared channels you will keep your business high up in search engine rankings, which will bring customers knocking on your door, giving you the opportunity to convert sales.
And then of course there is the added bonus of doing more with less, for small business owners, every dollar has to go a long way. Getting journalists and influencers to write about your business won’t cost you a lot of money but more in time. By doing PR yourself and with your staff, you’re continually working on building trust and credibility for your brand without spending too many marketing dollars. But you have to have a plan — with a plan you can work smarter not harder.

Your smartphone can be a multi million dollar marketing tool or it can just be a distraction. Many people use it as a distraction, not understanding that it’s not the phone or tool that is important but the person using it. Instead of spending time on Instagram, Youtube, Facebook and so on, why not reach out and build meaningful relationships with people in your niche? And yes, I agree, Public Relations articles are a must because it’s a good way to create exposure. If you can find an interesting way to frame your business, journalists might want to showcase it. And this again will bring in much more eyes on your business.
